Many people are interested in mantras and how to use them. Some mantras, and some sounds used in them, don’t only belong to any one religion, but are shared by a variety of different religions. For example the Gayatri mantra, which originated from Hinduism, is often used by non-Hindus. An even more common example is the “Om” sound which is used in Buddhism, Hinduism and other religions.

The “Om” sound, and some mantras, have even come into more secular, non-religious use such as in some form of modern Yoga (some of which have lost their spiritual roots), and some meditation methods, owing to their effect of calming the mind. This is augmented by the fact that many of the sounds of mantras derive from ancient language of Sanskrit. The sounds from the Sanskrit language (the vowels and consonants) are said to have a direct positive effect on our inner constitution and therefore teachers of certain types of yoga teach Sanskrit mantras to their students even in an entirely secular context. Such teachers tend to encourage their students to use the original Sanskrit version of the mantra, rather than offering them a translated version in English, owing to the “enlightening” effect of the sounds of Sanskrit.

The effect of a mantra is said to be “vibrational”. What this means that it is often best to not be overly concerned about the “meaning” of a mantra, but to allow the vibration of the sounds have their effects on us.

However, one of the most important elements of using mantras (such as to calm the mind relax the body, or to change our life circumstances) is our intention. What effect are we intending to have with the mantra? Therefore it could be said, if it is easier for someone to hold their intention clear by using words in their native language, then that may well be a more effective form of mantra for them than one in Sanskrit.  Sometimes it is good to change between the the Sanskrit version of a mantra and a translated version as it might help you get into a the feeling of the mantra. Then when you switch back to the Sanskrit version, if you can maintain the feeling,  you can have both the benefits of the feeling effect as well as the vibrational effect of the mantra.

Some mantras have specific purpose such as healing a specific health issue, attracting more money, finding a life partner, or getting a better job. Some mantras are more general and are aimed at creating better general health, or helping us feel more at peace or even helping us achieve enlightenment.

Thomas Ashley Farrand is a popular and much respected author on mantras and his books are very helpful in explaining the power and effectiveness of mantras in accessible ways. Even people in Asia, who may well have the use of mantras as part of their daily life, use and recommend his books – so his writings and audio material are well worth investigating.

Most of us are carrying around heavy rocks without even being aware of it. Everything and everyone we have not forgiven is a heavy rock we carry. It weighs us down and makes life a struggle when it does not have to be.

Whatever form of mantra you like to use: Gayatri Mantra, Mahamrityunjaya Mantra, Om Namah Shivaya, Suresh Wadkar Gayatri Mantra, Hare Rama, Hare Krishna, Ganesh Mantra, Or Even The Saraswati, Hanuman, Shiv, Surya, Maha Mrityunjaya, Tarak, Lakshmi, Hare Krishna, Kuber Mantras.
